Strickland Estate + Nielsen Park Masterplan
Strickland Estate and Nielsen Park form a culturally significant landscape integral to Sydney’s history, encompassing Aboriginal culture, European settlement, and health and wellbeing. This continuously inhabited area offers unique harbourside parkland and quality open spaces within Sydney Harbour National Park.

In partnership with TKD Architects, CONTEXT led the landscape planning and design for the masterplan, drawing on extensive expertise in national park management and sensitive ecological environments. Seven guiding principles were established: conserve natural and cultural heritage; manage sustainability; enhance accessibility; welcome all visitors; improve transport linkages; ensure future conservation; and foster partnerships and collaboration.
A key aspect of the masterplan is analysing existing buildings in the National Park to explore adaptive reuse options that honour their historical significance and connection to the landscape. The masterplan aims to create a cohesive framework for the next 20 years of the site’s operation, fostering a recreational precinct that celebrates its rich culture, heritage, and landscape character while supporting future improvements across Strickland Estate and Nielsen Park.
