Commissioned by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), CONTEXT prepared a long-term precinct plan for the Kalkari Discovery Centre in the south-west of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. The plan sets a 30+ year vision to reimagine the precinct as a destination where nature, culture, community, and education converge.
Grounded in site analysis, stakeholder consultation, and planning policy, the plan outlines a holistic, staged framework to renew visitor facilities while conserving ecological and cultural values. Key elements include a contemporary Discovery Centre with flexible indoor and outdoor learning spaces, an immersive Education Loop and thematic gardens, secluded areas for respite in nature, an inclusive escarpment walk, and new lookouts and an amphitheatre for interpretation and teaching.

Design principles prioritise accessibility, storytelling, and respect for Country, with interpretive elements to be co-designed with Aboriginal stakeholders. Staged works include adaptive reuse of existing assets, infrastructure upgrades, ecological regeneration, and sustainable transport such as a future shuttle. The project positions Kalkari as a gateway to Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, offering inclusive and educational experiences for generations to come.
