In collaboration with CM+ and Cultural Capital, CONTEXT was engaged by John Holland Seymour Whyte for Transport for NSW to deliver the detailed design for the now-completed Sydney Gateway. This high-capacity roadway links WestConnex to Sydney Airport’s domestic and international terminals, establishing a landmark arrival and departure point for the city.
Sydney Gateway offers a dynamic threshold experience, blending engineering, landscape, architecture, and art to celebrate place and enhance the local community and environment. The Active Transport Link (ATL), running along the Alexandra Canal, includes landscape nodes, rest areas, and interpretive elements that enrich the journey for pedestrians and cyclists.
Rooted in its coastal setting and cultural context, the project delivers a bold ‘Gateway experience’— culminating in a grand ‘Welcome to Country’ gesture through integrated infrastructure, landscape mounds, and Aboriginal artworks created in close collaboration with Carmen Glynn- Braun, Dennis Golding, Uncle Steve Russell, and Aunty Phyllis Stewart.
