Argyle Terrace

CONTEXT, in collaboration with TKD Architects, prepared the public domain and landscape design for the upgrade of the historic Argyle Terrace courtyard in The Rocks. Commissioned by Placemaking NSW, the project reimagines the space to support dining, gathering, and cultural activation within a highly constrained heritage setting.

The design responds directly to the sandstone cliff face as the defining spatial condition. A restrained palette of brick paving, sandstone, and bronze references the established material character of The Rocks, while integrated walls, stairs, and seating improve accessibility and provide flexible places to pause and gather.

Location:
The Rocks, Sydney, NSW
Client:
Placemaking NSW
Duration:
2021 – 2025

Planting is carefully calibrated to soften the hardscape and reinforce connection to Country, with native rock-face species and ferns introduced where space permits. Weather protection and amenity are addressed through modular umbrellas, a proposed canopy, recessed lighting, and discreet safety measures, supporting comfortable use across a range of conditions.

Together, these interventions deliver a robust and respectful public domain upgrade that strengthens Argyle Terrace as a human-scaled courtyard within Sydney’s most significant heritage precinct.
