Granville Park Playspace

CONTEXT is partnering with Cumberland City Council on a transformative revitalisation of Granville Park in Merrylands that will expand the playspace, upgrade recreational facilities and create a welcoming, inclusive environment promoting healthy, active lifestyles.

The project aligns with Council’s community vision of “Welcome, Belong, Succeed” and its planning for open space and recreation reinforcing the park’s role as a safe, free public space where families can relax and children can play.

The new playspace integrates adventurous nature play with mounded slides, natural tiered seating, climbing towers, a universal carousel, accessible swings and a communal shade structure. At its centre, a sensory‑rich splash pad offers jets, misters, water pumps and a signature cascading water feature inspired by a local First Nations story about smoke transforming into rain. The enlarged water play area — named the Laurie Ferguson Splash Park — provides an exciting interactive experience for children of all ages, while new amenities like modern change facilities and toilets ensure the park remains accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

First Nations knowledge and cultural narratives are embedded throughout the landscape through interpretive elements developed with Barrumattagal leaders.

Water‑sensitive urban design strategies and CPTED principles underpin the layout to create a sustainable, safe and inclusive environment. Beyond the splash park, the playground incorporates elements designed to stimulate creativity, exploration and physical activity inviting the community to gather, play and rest.

By bringing together culturally rich storytelling, nature‑based play and upgraded amenities, the revitalised Granville Park will become a cherished destination that fosters connection to Country and offers free, high‑quality recreational experiences for the growing Merrylands community.
