Singita Kwitonda Lodge, Rwanda

The Singita Kwitonda Lodge is situated in northwest Rwanda, at the foothills of the Volcanoes National Park, famous as the natural habitat of the critically endangered mountain gorilla. Attracting sustainable tourism investment to diversify the economy, and partner in the protection of the country’s natural and cultural assets, it is built and operated to the highest level of sustainability.

CONTEXT in collaboration with Milton Group designed the landscape to meet the project’s strategic objectives through a design that aimed to rehabilitate a degraded landscape, respond to the climate and unique site characteristics, and create a space that caters to a high-end tourism market.

Since opening in August 2018, it has received international attention, including: Travel + Leisure ‘2020 It List’, Tatler Travel Awards 2020 – ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ Winner, and The New York Times ‘Top 5 New Safari Camps’

The landscape design included key elements such as:

  • A water management strategy that uses a system of culverts, fjords, weirs and wetlands to direct and slow water movement in an environment prone to extreme storm events
  • An elevated central walkway connecting the individual guest rooms, which allows the natural hydrological functions to occur below while also serving as an interpretation walk for the reforestation program
  • An endemic plant palette to reforest the agricultural land, with key species used as ornamental plantings around guest areas, all grown in a permanent nursery to support ongoing reforestation
  • Dramatic feature stone walls that mimic the volcanic backdrop and control sightlines between guest rooms
  • A suite of design elements that maximise locally available materials and draw on the skill-set of the local workforce
  • Green roofs to around 70% of the buildings to minimise visual impact and create rooftop habitat.
