The Crescent, Parramatta Parklands

CONTEXT was commissioned by Parramatta Park & Western Sydney Parklands Trust to prepare the design and construction detail for an upgrade to the popular outdoor event space, The Crescent.

CONTEXT liaised with the Park’s Heritage Office and produced a design for a new crescent shaped stage area reflective of the natural shape of the river bend. The space is paved in stone with colour gradations to reflect a river bed siltation layers, this being the location of the former ana-branch of the Parramatta River.

Areas of gravel and lawn defined by long bands of planting and pavement are drawn from the wheat fields that existed during colonial periods. Vegetation was strategically installed to soften the proposed paved area and to strengthen the existing landscape.

The upgrade to the event space will attract a boarder calibre of international artists and promoters and the enlarged stage space makes it a suitable venue for larger scale musical events, accommodating up to 15,000 people.
