Macquarie University

CONTEXT in collaboration with COX Architecture has prepared detailed landscape design and tender documentation for the “Gateway” and the “Crossing”. The design involved the re-routing of University Avenue and a new pedestrian entry from the train station to the heart of the campus via a 12 metre by 30 metre long bridge wide pedestrian bridge over University Creek.

The Crossing is complemented by a complete transformation of formal and informal open spaces within the precinct. The elements seek to create an experience that complements the public domain and enhances the biodiversity of the creek riparian corridor.

The “Launch” and “Landing” at the east and west ends of the bridge create meeting places for students and staff and become nodes from where various precincts of the campus are reached. The landings provide information hubs, drinking fountain and water bottle refill stations and shade from trees within timber decked seating areas. Continuous weather protection is not provided along the length of the Crossing however shelter structures at both landings will provide rain shelter.

Stepping down from the new West “Landing”, a series of terraces oriented toward the creek are formed to create a new amphitheatre space. Suitable for performances, outdoor tutorial uses or just relaxing, the space provides shade from trees, abundant seating options and shelter and will become a focal point not only for the campus but for new commercial and research uses along University Avenue. The introduction of sinuous concrete steps with integrated lighting through the lawn areas create a series of stepped spaces for use by students and staff. The “Crossing” bridge will be the iconic element in the University’s new entry experience. The design response seeks to deliver a fine and elegant structure that floats above the creek corridor.
