CONTEXT was commissioned by the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) to prepare a masterplan report for Wattamolla in the Royal National Parks, a popular destination during peak holiday seasons. Key issues that were addressed in the masterplan were related to the capacity of Wattamolla’s environment, infrastructure and parking. CONTEXT worked in conjunction with traffic and tourism consultants to determine an appropriate visitor capacity for the site and introduced a range of landscape solutions to cater for that capacity.

Upon analysis, a number of spaces within the site were underused even on peak days and the masterplan aims to improve upon this situation through strategic moves like pruning vegetation to open up views and re-appropriating spaces for camping instead of picnics.

The project’s location within a National Park also meant that the materiality of designed elements had to blend into and accentuate the natural environment and be integrated into the broader park.
