Kuching
Kuching Riverfront, Sarawak, Malaysia
commissioned by Sarawak Economic Development Corporation
in conjunction with Conybeare Morrison
The 1km long Kuching Waterfront is a “quality of life” urban landscape project which has enhanced the city and drawn the residents back to the river. The project involved the replacement of existing mud flats with a vibrant waterfront promenade combining a series of public gardens, riverside walks, restaurants, galleries, public squares and civic spaces. Working in conjunction with Conybeare Morrison and Partners, CONTEXT developed the tropical landscape setting which included colourful shade trees and shrubs, water features, artworks and paving patterns using contemporary forms blended with local indigenous motifs.
The project was awarded the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects National Project Award (1994), a Citation in the International Section of the 1994 Royal Australian Institute of Architects Award, and the Honour Award from The Waterfront Centre Washington DC (1994).
